Eric Doeringer (b. 1974) is an American contemporary artist who is based in LA. Doeringer holds a BA from Brown University 1996 and completed an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1999.
Eric Doeringer is a meta-meta artist, known for selling “Bootleg” versions of contemporary artworks from cars parked outside galleries and art fairs. His distinctive selection of motifs are primarily chosen from famous conceptualist art works that themselves are considered to be “art about art”, and not necessarily canonical works of the Modern and Postwar eras of art.
Highlighting the tenuous relationships that exists between original art, value, desire, ownership and appreciation; Doeringer’s practice not only highlights these positions, but also actively challenges them, by making his facsimiles available and affordable to the many.
The meticulous care with which he creates each of his reproductions gives Doeringer’s enterprise a persuasive feeling of authenticity and exclusivity that also run counter to our immediate reaction to anything reproduced. Combined with the effect of seeing artworks, by what is considered the absolute best in the art historical canon, side by side and outside their usual exclusive surroundings also manifests the power of the object and motifs – even when we know the pieces are not original. At least not the original.
Eric Doeringer has previously shown his work at institutions such as MoMA PS1, The Whitney Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, MassMoCA, La Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and MUSAC (Spain). Recent exhibitions include A Collection, Felix Art Fair (2020); Christy’s, A Hug From The Art World (2019); The Artist is Present, curated by Maurizio Cattelan, The Yuz Museum, Shanghai, China (2018); and Ed Ruscha: Books & Co., curated by Bob Monk, Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills, California (2016), Traveled to: Gagosian Gallery, Paris, France (2015), Museum Brandhorst, Munich, Germany (2013), and Gagosian Gallery, New York, NY (2013).
