Opening on Friday 8 October the gallery will present ‘Poesia Muta’, the debut solo exhibition in Scandinavia by Italian artist Tomaso Binga. Born in 1931 in Salerno, Bianca Menna adopted the masculine-sounding name Tomaso Binga on a June day in 1976 to highlight gender inequality in the arts and to harness the privilege afforded male artists. Officiating the change by performing a wedding between herself and her male alter-ego, the ceremony was documented as the work “Oggi Spose” (“Just Married”; 1976/2016). The gallery is thrilled to announce that this work will be included in Binga’s upcoming exhibition at Brigade. The work’s title is emblematic of Binga’s longstanding interest in problematising the gendered biases of language. Taking the traditional masculine phrase “oggi sposi” and converting it to the feminine form “oggi spose”, Binga refutes the connotations of female subjugation and repositions the marriage ceremony as an assertion of feminine artistic agency.
