A clothbound compendium of Theaster Gates' interdisciplinary exploration of artistic and religious representations of the Black Madonnas. For his Kuntsmuseum Basel exhibition, Chicago-based multiartist Theaster Gates interrogates the mainstream art world's Eurocentrism through a multi-venue, multimedia exploration of the figure of the Black Madonna.

The making of objects, Gates argues, is always also a social intervention, since the spheres of artistic and political agency are inextricably interconnected. The presentation at the Kunstmuseum Basel building showcased a number of site-specific artworks and installations including a shrine of sorts to the Black Madonna that entered into a critical dialogue with the venue’s architecture and collections.
